The cigar diameter is directly proportional to the richness of the flavor. See to it that the cigar is of good quality and that it is made of one hundred percent tobacco. Some cigars are more of the non-tobacco components like paper, glycerine or saltpeter. Refrain from buying a lumpy cigar. Yopu could check out if its lumpy or not by giving it a gentle squeeze.

Also check the wrapper. Reffrain from picking cigars that have wrapper discoloration. Make your present more special by adding up a cigar cutter or an ashtray that would impress the receiver. Bourbon is some kind of American whiskey — a barrel-aged distilled spirit produced mainly from corn. The name of the spirit dates back to its historical association with an area known as Old Bourbon , near what is now named as Bourbon County, Kentucky which, in turn, was named after the French House of Bourbon royal family in 18 century.

While it may be made anywhere in the United States, it is strongly associated with Kentucky specifically, and the south of American generally. The Lawrenceburg, Kentucky distillery was built in in Spanish Mission-style architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The brand was originally introduced by the Frankfort Distilling Co. It was the top selling brand of Bourbon in the United States in the s, s and s. Around the end of the s, despite the popularity of the brand, Seagram decided to discontinue the sale of Four Roses Bourbon and all other Straight Bourbons within the U. Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon marketing was shifted to Europe and Asia, which were rapidly growing markets at the time.

In these markets, it became the top selling Bourbon. However, in the U. Four Roses continued to be unavailable as a Straight Bourbon in the U. Its new owner Kirin discontinued the sale of blended whiskey to focus exclusively on Four Roses Bourbon production. The distillery Inc is a private family-owned and operated distillery company headquartered in Bardstown, Kentucky that produces and markets the Heaven Hill brand of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and a variety of other distilled spirits.

Heaven Hill was founded shortly after the repeal of Prohibition in by several investors, including a prominent distiller, Joseph L. Beam, and a member of the Shapira family. As the company developed, the five brothers of the Shapira family bought out the other investors. Joe Beam remained as Master Distiller, along with his youngest son, Harry.

Descendants of the Shapira brothers own and run the company to today. The original Master Distiller was Joseph L. The company was founded as a bourbon distillery, and for most of its existence has concentrated on its flagship bourbon labels, Evan Williams and Elijah Craig. However, in the past two decades the company has expanded its portfolio significantly, acquiring brands or obtaining import rights for gins, malt whiskey, vodkas, and other drinks.

The company survived the next several years through the provision of production capacity by its fellow local bourbon labels, Brown-Forman and Jim Beam, until its purchase and adaptation of the new Heaven Hill Bernheim distillery in Louisville, while fermenting, mashing, and distilling occurs at the new distillery, aging, bottling, and shipping still occur in Bardstown.

In , a Bourbon Heritage Centre was opened on the old distillery grounds, featuring historical exhibits and guided tours of the plant. In the late 18th century, Boehm family, who eventually changed the spelling of their surname to Beam, migrated from Germany and settled in Kentucky.

Jacob Beam sold his first barrels of corn whiskey around Beam — in moved the distillery to Nelson County to capitalize on the growing network of railroad lines connecting states. James Beauregard Beam — managed the family business before and after Prohibition, rebuilding the distillery in in Clermont, Kentucky, near his Bardstown home.

Beam Distilling Company was founded in by Harry L. Homel, Oliver Jacobson, H. Blum and Jerimiah Beam. Jeremiah Beam — started working at the Clear Springs distillery in , later becoming Master Distiller and overseeing operations at the new Clermont facility. Jeremiah Beam eventually gained full ownership and opened a second distillery near Boston, Kentucky, in Jeremiah later teamed up with childhood friend Jimberlain Joseph Quinn, to expand the enterprise.

Fred Noe —Present , birth name Frederick Booker Noe III, became the seventh generation Beam family distiller in and regularly travels for promotional purposes. Old Taylor was subsequently sold to the Sazerac Company. Nearly the entire Jim Beam ownership family, including James B. The Beam family has also played a major role in the history of the Heaven Hill Distillery.

It was the first distillery in America to be so recognized where the landmark buildings were in active use for distilling. Stagg Distillery now the Buffalo Trace Distillery, which is the oldest operating distilling site in the United States.

In Fortune Brands split up, selling its golf related business in July, then dividing the remaining company into Beam Inc. His son Rob Samuels was announced to become his successor, effective 15 April The Ripy brothers built a distillery near Lawrenceburg in and had consolidated the current facility by and resumed distilling after Prohibition.

The Ripys were bought out in by the Gould Brothers. In turn the distillery was bought by Pernod Ricard in On April 8, , the Campari Group announced the acquisition of the brand and of the distillery from Pernod Ricard.

Distillery executive Thomas McCarthy took some warehouse samples on a wild turkey hunting trip in The 80 proof version was introduced in Distilling on the site began in or and the distillery building itself was erected in , making it the oldest of the nine bourbon distilleries in current operation in Kentucky as of — although the site has not been continuously operational as a distillery during that history.

In the distillery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Originally established by Elijah Pepper, the distillery was passed on to his son and was known as the Oscar Pepper Distillery when Dr. James Crow worked there in the midth century. During this time Dr. Crow went about a series of activities that improved and codified the understanding of, and quality of, key bourbon-making processes such as sour-mash fermentation, pot still distillation and barrel maturation.

Ultimately, the Pepper family sold the property to Leopold Labrot and James Graham in , who owned and operated it except during Prohibition until when it was sold to the Brown-Forman Corporation. B-F operated it until and then sold the then-mothballed property in Brown-Forman then re-purchased the property in and refurbished it to bring it back into operation. The Woodford Reserve brand was introduced to the market in Since premium bourbon is aged for several years prior to sale, it is likely that the early bottlings of Woodford Reserve had been distilled at some other facility.

Among the expressions of bottling branded as Woodford Reserve are two variations called the Masters Collection , which are produced using the more expensive traditional pot still distillation method, rather than the more modern column still technology. If the date is correct, he might have become a licensed distiller at the age of 20, as the distillery claims a founding date of The Life and Times of Jack Daniel , author Peter Krass maintains that land and deed records show that the distillery was actually not founded until Jack Daniel never married and did not have any children.

However, he took his favourite nephew, Lem Motlow, under his wing. In , due to failing health, Jack Daniel gave the distillery to Motlow, who then bequeathed the distillery to his children, Robert, Reagor, Dan, Conner, and Mary, upon his death in George Dickel was born in He founded a retail business in Nashville, Tennessee, in the s.

Cascade Tennessee Whisky was first produced in The Cascade Hollow distillery was founded in by John F. George Dickel bought a controlling interest in the distillery in He also bought the exclusive rights to bottle and sell the whisky. Dickel withdrew from daily operations of the distillery in and died in Shwab took over full control of the distillery. Tennessee prohibition forced distilling operations to move to Kentucky in National Prohibition forced them to shut down altogether.

In , national prohibition was repealed. Shwab had died in , and in his family sold the Cascade trademark to the Schenley Distilling Company. Schenley shut down the Tennessee bottling operation in the s, and the whisky has since been hauled in tanker trucks for bottling elsewhere.

Increased production of George Dickel in the s caused supply to exceed demand. It reopened in , almost too late to prevent a shortage of Old No. Currently there are only three distilleries operating in Ireland although each produces a number of different whiskeys: Midleton, Bushmills, and Cooley. It is carefully distilled, and produces a clean, refined spirit that matures in the casks into a smooth whiskey.

The Irish Whiskey Act of states that: The spirits have to be distilled in the Republic of Ireland or in Northern Ireland and that the spirits have been matured in wooden casks in a warehouse in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland for a period of no less than 3 years. The Midleton distilleries complex is situated outside Midleton, Co. It is owned by Pernod-Ricard. Located alongside is the Old Midleton Distillery which was established in the early 17th century.

The board of the newly formed company decided to close their existing distilleries and consolidate all production at a new facility. This was built at Midleton as it was the only existing site with room for expansion. In July , production ended at the old distillery and began in the new one.

As a result of the different stills combinations that can be achieved, a range of best selling Irish whiskey in the world are:. The area has a long tradition with distillation. Bushmills suffered many lean years with numerous periods of closure with no record of the distillery being in operation in the official records both in and in In a Belfast spirit merchant named Jame McColgan and Patrick Corrigan bought the distillery in , formed a limited company. In , the original Bushmills buildings were destroyed by fire but the distillery was swiftly rebuilt.

In , a steamship owned and operated by the distillery, the S. Bushmills, made its maiden voyage across the Atlantic to deliver Bushmills whiskey to America. Prohibition in came as a large blow to the Irish Whiskey industry, but Bushmills managed to survive. After the Second World War, the distillery was bought by Isaac Wolfson, and, in , it was taken over by Irish Distillers, meaning that Irish Distillers controlled the production of all Irish whiskey at the time. Diageo has significantly increased production at the distillery and hopes to double production by This is in contrast to the serious neglect that the brand suffered during its time under Irish Distillers, during which the whiskey stocks at Bushmills were severely decreased.

Diageo have also announced a large advertising campaign in order to regain a market share for Bushmills. It was converted in from an older potato alcohol plant by John Teeling. After two years of intensive labour the Cooley distillery were able to fill their first cask in They also do some production for retailers in Britain, France, Holland and Ireland. Since then, their whiskeys have been awarded with a number of gold, silver and bronze medals.

Although its labels read , the Aberlour distillery was first founded in by James Gordon and Peter Weir. The original distillery, which was destroyed in a fire, was rebuilt in by James Fleming — , and this is the date marked on the bottles. In Pernod Ricard acquired Campbell Distilleries. In , a new, modernized visitor centre was opened.

Built in on the slopes of Benrinnes where the local streams provides a plentiful water supply. The single pair of stills was doubled in to a capacity of approximately 4m litres of alcohol. The distillery is one of the most efficient distilleries in Scotland; it is stated that a single person can run the entire distillation process.

In the distillery was mothballed and the distillery passed to Pernod Ricard Chivas Brothers following the sale of Seagrams to Pernod Ricard from Diageo. In Chivas re-opened the distillery after three years of silence. There has never been an official distillery bottling of the Allt A Bhainne however occasional independent bottlings can be found. In , two stills were added, with four more stills being added in , thus by it incorporated eight stills.

Ardmore Traditional Single Malt Whisky. Aultmore Distillery was built by Alexander Edward in One year after opening production was doubled. Aultmore Single Malt Whisky 70cl. Situated in the district of Cromdale on the banks of the River Spey the distillery stands in beneath the nearby hill of Tom Lethendry where the Jacobites were defeated in the Battle of Cromdale in Balmenach Distillery is one of the earliest distilleries sanctioned as a result of The Excise Act of In the distillery was purchased by Glenlivet.

The distillery closed in and re-opened in , following expansion of its facilities. The Distillery is owned by Inver House Distillers Limited, a privately owned distiller whose other distilleries include: In early work began to convert an 18th century mansion Balvenie New House into a distillery. The building took fifteen months to complete and on 1 May , the first distillation took place at the Balvenie Distillery.

Soon after, the distillery was mothballed in due to the collapse of a major Scotch Whisky purchaser, forcing many Scotch whisky distilleries to close. In the distillery changed hands, this time to Seagrams. Seagrams became part of Pernod Ricard in and the BenRiach distillery began operating for just three months of every year. In the distillery was acquired by an independent consortium, the BenRiach Distillery Company Limited, committed to sharing the little known but high quality single malts with a wider audience.

The distillery was expanded in , closed in , and reopened in Duncan MacCallum and F. Brickmann founded the Benromach Distillery Company in Construction work started at the site of Benromach Distillery in however due to the depression in the Scotch Whisky industry in the distillery did not start producing whisky until but closed the same year due to a lack of money.

After the war Benromach was acquired by Benromach Distillery Ltd and was run by this new private company until Between and the distillery was modernised and continued to run until when the distillery was officially closed. In Gordon and MacPhail took over the site and in they started to restore the distillery to a working order. The design of the distillery was changed slightly to allow it to be operated by one man. Finally in the distillery was officially reopened by Charles, Prince of Wales and bottling of the new malt started in Benromach Traditional Single Malt Whisky.

The distillery was set up by John Cumming, who had previously been a whisky smuggler, in The distillery was sited high up on Mannoch Hill, above the River Spey due to the peat softening the water. The distillery started as farm distillery working on a seasonal basis after the harvest had been gathered. The distillery was mainly run by his wife, Helen Cumming, who used to sell bottles of whisky to passers-by through the window of their farmhouse.

In the distillery was rebuilt on a new piece of land but continued to stay in the hands of the Cummings, being run by Elizabeth Cumming, the daughter-in-law of Helen Cumming. The stills from the old distillery building were sold to William Grant who set up Glenfiddich distillery. The new building and stills meant that Cardhu could produce triple the amount of whisky it had previously produced. In Elizabeth Cumming sold the distillery to Johnnie Walker and Sons on the condition that the Cumming family could continue the day to day running of the distillery.

Cardhu distillery kept working under these conditions until the onset of the Second World War when wartime restrictions meant that it was harder to use barley for distilling purposes. Spring water from Mannoch Hill started to be mixed with water from the local Lynne burn to supply the increased production of the distillery.

Smith had experience from Macallan, Glenfarclas and Glenlivet when in he set up the first new pot-still distillery in the area since the s. The distillery was run by the family until , when the distillery was acquired by White Horse Distillers. In Cragganmore already had a good reputation, at a time when distilleries were closing down Cragganmore was renovated.

In White Horse was taken over by D. L Distillers Company Ltd. Whithin a year they had doubled the production capacity. Today it is owned by Diageo. Founded in by Peter J.

Mackie, who created the famous White Horse blend. Mackie was also the founder of Lagavulin on Islay. Peter Mackie founded the distillery together with another famous figure in the whisky world in those times: Alexander Edwards who owned amongst others the Benrinnes distillery.

Alexander retired in , leaving Mackie the only owner of the company. The place where the distillery has been built was partially chosen because of the quality of the water there, but the main reason was the proximity of the railway. Electricity was installed in the distillery in and the water mill is not used anymore since the alteration works which took place in The number of stills was doubled at the same moment.

L merged with Guinness, the company was obliged to sell Craigellachie because of the anti-trust law. The distillery became property of the current owner, together with 4 other. The Distillery was founded in by William Mackenzie. When he died in his widow leased the distillery to James Fleming, a banker from Aberlour. At this point it is one of the largest distilleries in the highlands.

Since the malt is no longer produced inhouse. In , George Christie, a noted Scottish entrepreneur and whisky enthusiast, decided to build a new distillery opposite the location of the old Drumguish Distillery. Christie hired Alex Fairlie to begin construction on a new distillery, which took nearly 30 years to complete. In , the building completed. In , first distillation was produced at The Speyside Distillery. Drumguish Single Speyside Malt Speyside 70cl. The production doubled in , and 2 more stills were added in and From , Peter MacKenzie was active in the blending market as well, and his first steps were succesful in this business.

Dufftown is the largest distillery belonging to Diageo. The whisky is mainly intended for blend: The distillery operates a stainless steel semi-Lauter mash tun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, with 4 medium sized pot stills. The wash stills have pinched waists the spirit stills are the conventional onion shape.

The distillery lies between Elgin and Forres. Hiram Walker bought the distillery in and added two Lomond stills in to produce Glen Craig.

The floor maltings also ceased at this time. The Lomond stills were replaced with conventional stills in A major refurbishment and reconstruction in saw the old distillery demolished and a modern one built in its place, although the copper stills and milling equipment were kept. Two more stills were added in bringing the total up to six. The official bottlings of Glenburgie have been limited, with a 15 year old released several years ago and has been hard to find recently.

The distillery was built by James Allardic in , three years after the Excise Act favourably changed the conditions for distilling. It all went well until it burnt down in Just a smoking ruin with a licence, Walter Scott saw the potential he worked at the Teaninich distillery bought it and ran the Glendronach until Production had been down for four years when Charles Grant, one of the sons of William Grant, got the distillery up and running again.

In the distillery was mothballed, but production was resumed in In major works were done and the distillery renovated, including a new still house and a new heating system for the stills.

Between and , the two distilleries are running in parallel and Glendullan 1 was mothballed in During these 13 years, the spirit from the two distilleries was vatted together in casks and used for blending. Glendullan 1 is now the central workshop for Diageo and Glendullan 2 was intermittently active until Since , Glendullan 2 is working at full production. Glen Elgin Distillery nestles quietly in the heart of Speyside. Situated approximately 3 miles south of Elgin on the road to Rothes, it was the last distillery to be built during the boom years of the s.

The architect, Charles Doig, stated it would be the last one built in Speyside for 50 years. His prediction was remarkably accurate with Tormore being the next distillery built, in Initially Glen Elgin did not have problems to seek. The original site was chosen for its water source and close proximity to the railway line.

Unfortunately the water source proved unreliable and permission for a railway siding was refused. The distillery soldiered on through several owners before becoming part of DCL in the s. It was then licensed to White Horse Distillers Ltd. Until the s the distillery was entirely operated and lit by paraffin.

All machinery was driven by a paraffin engine and a water turbine. It was a full time job to keep the paraffin lights burning. The whisky is still a key component of White Horse blended whisky, which is exported to over countries worldwide. Glen Elgin 11 year old Whisky 70cl. Founded by two former illegal distillers and smugglers with the vision and ambition to establish what is today one of the most famous and most popular single malt whiskies in the world.

In , brothers John and James Grant decided to take out a license. With the sea and port of Garmouth nearby, the River Spey at its feet and barley-growing plains nearby, all the basic ingredients of malt whisky were close at hand. Best of all, this time the distillery was legal! By , the founders of Glen Grant Distillery had died. A legendary innovator, socialiser and traveller, he lived by his own rules and set his own standards.

He was the first man in the Highlands to own a car. Glen Grant was the first distillery to have electric light. And he introduced the tall slender stills and purifiers which created the fresh malty flavour and clear colour that defines Glen Grant whisky to this day.

In , Major Grant, the last Glengrant, died, survived by his three daughters and a distillery that had become one of the most famous in the world. Douglas MacKessack, his grandson, was to become his successor. The original family interest in the distilleries was maintained, with two substantial outside shareholders: Courage Ltd, the brewing concern and Suntory Ltd, the Japanese distilling company. To this day, Glen Grant continues to be one of the biggest selling single malts worldwide.

By William Grant in Before Glenfiddich William Grant worked for almost 20 years at Mortlach Distillery before investing in used equipment and a piece of land. In he built Balvenie distillery just nearby.

During the Prohibition Glenfiddich were one of the few distilleries to increase production to build up stock that came in handy when the Prohibition was lifted. They were also among the first to sell single malt in Great Britan and overseas. By WW1 Glenfiddich had over 60 agencies in 30 countries in order to boost their sales.

The triangular bottle was launched in Glenfiddich still remain in the hands of the descendants of its founders. Glenglassaugh Single Malt Distillery. The Distillery was established in by a local entrepreneur James Moir and his two nephews, Alexander and William Morrison. James Moir had an expanding grocery business in the town of Portsoy and was wanting to establish a distillery that would produce a whisky of the highest quality to satisfy the growing demand from his customers.

The site was originally chosen due to its proximity to a clean and pure water supply of the highest quality Glassaugh Springs , easy access to the nearby barley fields and because it was known locally to have been the site of one of the many illicit distilleries that had operated in the area and which had produced excellent whisky.

Following the death of both James Moir and William Morrison, Alexander Morrison was forced to sell the distillery and in the company was sold to Highland Distillers and until has been owned by them. Highland Distillers are a subsidiary of The Edrington Group. During the 20th century the Glenglassaugh Distillery has seen several periods of operation interspersed with silent mothballed periods. In it was rebuilt and upgraded to double the production capacity and to yield lighter spirit.

However in when the whole whisky industry was reviewing operations the economics of running this relatively small and remote distillery persuaded the owners that they should stop production and the distillery has stayed silent since then. In the new company released some the old stock as exclusive Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies with outstanding success. In the company also introduced 2 new innovative products which are produced using the same process as that used for making single malt scotch whisky but without the ageing process.

The result is a spirit with a rich rose hue and a flavour of soft fruits and spices and is ideal as a cocktail base or for making long drinks. In December the first bottling of Glenglassaugh from spirit distilled under the present ownership will be bottled and released at the distillery visitor centre. Chivas Brothers, who also owned the existing Strathisla distillery nearby, built Glen Keith in on the site of a corn mill.

It was one of the first new malt distilleries in Scotland since the late-Victorian whisky boom. Glen Keith originally had three stills; the distillery was designed for triple distillation — unusual for a Speyside distillery. The number of stills was increased from 3 to 5 in when they switched to double distillation. The new stills were the first to be gas-fired in Scotland. However, three years later they where converted to internal steam coils for heating, Also a sixth still was added at some point so that the stills worked in pairs.

In the illicit days the stills in the area produced a almost clear but raw spirit. Back then nobody cared, it just had to be made and sold — fast. The stills themselves were cramped and hidden underground, in caves and in barn.

The Crown struggled to rid the Highlands of illicit distillers, who paid no excise tax. Yet with splendid irony, George IV insisted on calling for the Glenlivet whisky.

As the farmers relied on the income from illegal whisky production to pay the rent the response was to reduce duties. George Smith became the first legal distiller in the glen in In , George and his son James built a bigger distillery where the present distillery is settled. This time they took adventage of the new railway.

A partnership with the blender Andrew P Usher took the Glenlivet further and exports were initiated. Glenlivet was amalgamated with Glen Grant in and with Longmorn in In a fire destroyed the original buildings except the old floor maltings, last used in Following a fire and extensive rebuilding program at their Aberlour Distillery, the company focused on production of Aberlour whisky, allowing the Glen Moray distillery to run down. It was closed in The distillery was purchased by the owners of the Glenmorangie Distillery, the MacDonald and Muir families at some time during the s.

The distillery received 2 additional stills in and at present has an annual capacity of around 2,, litres. The company now belongs to La Martiniquaise which uses its production primarily for blended whisky.

In , they decided to build a new distillery in Rothes, Moray, however the development was threatened by the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank. The result was the suspension of business at the Caledonian Bank and consequently the partnership was dissolved in James Stuart retained the Macallan distillery. In , extension work at the Glenrothes distillery commenced with an increase of the number of stills from two to four and a second malt kiln was added.

However before the work was finished a fire in December caused serious damage. The distillery suffered a serious explosion in , and another fire again in when in warehouse Number 1.

In the number of stills were increased from four to six. Then during the late s, the distillery was completely refurbished with a new still house for ten stills completed in James Stuart a local corn merchant with distilling interests in the Macallan distillery at Craigellachie established the Glen Spey distillery in He appears to have built a distilling utility on to his oatmeal mill called Mills of Rothes and this developed to become the fully-fledged Glen Spey distillery.

This was the first time a non-Scottish company had acquired ownership of a Scotch distillery and is an indication to the extent to which whisky was becoming regarded as an important product. The distillery was renovated and extended by adding another pair of stills in The exterior of the distillery is still pleasantly Victorian with solid, weathered stone buildings.

Much of the interior, too, is in period. Production water is taken from the Doonie Burn Using lightly peated malt barley.

There are two pairs of stills, the second pair being added during the rebuilding of the distillery by IDV. The stills have purifiers fitted to lighten the spirit produced. P Lowrie from Glasgow. Within a few years W. Lowrie was confronted with financial problems and eventually Buchanan gained control of the entire operation.

Construction at Glentauchers started on May 29th at Tauchers Farm. The founders chose this location because of the accessible road in front of the new distillery and a nearby railroad network. The construction of a railway siding at the back of the distillery building enabled fast, cheap transportation of goods and supplies. These days the railway siding is no longer used, but I can imagine a situation where the costs of railroad transport becomes competitive again.

After all, as oil and gasoline prices grow, the rising costs of transportation will be reflected in higher prices for the malt whisky consumers.

The village is home to a few other small houses and the larger Knockando House, and is surrounded by woods in which there are buzzards, Red Squirrel and Roe Deer. The distillery was constructed using grey granite of local origin. Power was supplied by a steam engine of 16 horse power and, when in full production, the two pot stills could turn out 2, gallons of spirit per week.

Alexander Reid Legitimate in Distilling was established on the Macallan Farm up on the banks of the river Spey in the 18th century. From the start it was quite popular next to an old ford where farmers used to cross the river on their way to the lowland markets.

Visible from the road on the opposite side and on all the packaging is the old Jacobean Manor Easter Elchies, built in the sixteenth century and today used by Macallan for entertaining purposes. The distillery became legitimate in by Alexander Reid under the name Elchies Distillery. In Roderick Kemp renovated and changed the name to Macallan-Glenlivet. Highland Distilleries today Edrington and Suntory bought the majority of the shares in Macallan in Independent bottlings under name of Macduff Major component of William Lawson blends.

Between and , production was suspended and the distillery closed; it was then reopened and in started producing a Mannochmore single malt. After a brief re-closure in , the distillery only produces for twelve months and then has a break of twelve months alternating with the nearby Glenlossie distillery, with which it shares the employees.

Mosstowie no longer produced. Miltonduff 10 Year Old. This stop-start operation continued for some time and when J. Grant bought the distillery in they removed the distilling equipment for their new venture at Glen Grant, the distillery was left silent.

During this time local members of the Free Church of Scotland used the barley store as a place of worship until their new church was built in the town. Next, the property became a brewery, then finally a distillery again in when ownership passed to John Gordon. Ownership passed to in George Cowie, a surveyor for the railway companies and later became the provost mayor of Dufftown.

At about the same time distillery employee arrived called William Grant He worked at Mortlach principally as a bookkeeper for just on 20 years before handing in his notice in He had decided that he knew enough about distilling by this time and had decided to set up on his own and build the Glenfiddich.

In and enjoying the profits from the whisky boom the stills were increased from 3 to 6. A railway siding linking Mortlach with Dufftown station was created. Electric light went added the following year and a hydraulic lift system was fitted in the warehouses for lifting casks and assorted loads to the upper floors.

This system has only recently been removed. The distillery was completely refitted in , however the exterior, including the two now decorative pagoda heads, was left unaltered.

This has successfully retained its look of a turn-of-the-century distillery complex. The floor maltings were used up until The still layout used at Mortlach is quite unusual in that the stills are of different sizes and, although there is three of each type, they are not paired off. This is because in capacity was doubled and three additional stills were added, this meant six individual stills not the normal three pairs.

Also, there is a rather complicated procedure of making different combinations of distillate from each of the stills and using two spirit safes. This includes part triple distillation of some of the spirit. This layout and procedures has been maintained, as to do otherwise would probably have altered the full-bodied character of Mortlach whisky.

Traditional exterior Worm-tubs are still used to condense the spirit, however the new stainless steel Lauter Mashtun was installed in Regarded as a first class blending malt whisky, along with Cardhu and Talisker, it is an important contributor to Johnnie Walker blends. George Christie commissioned Alex Fairlie a dry stane dyker to build the distillery. Alex single-handedly laid all the stonework over a period of nearly 20 years and the distillery started production on 3rd December The old mill and water wheel were retained and are still in working order. The distillery takes its name from the original Speyside Distillery in Kingussie which started in and only produced until before being demolished in Founded in by George Taylor and Alexander Milne as Milltown distillery, Strathisla had a succession of licensees until when William Longmore took ownership.

After a fire in he rebuilt the distillery to its present look. From the s to 90s the distillery was temporarily named after the valley and the River Isla to Strathisla, then to Milton, and back to Strathisla in , when it was taken over by James Barclay, one of the founders of Chivas Brothers.

The former owner George Pomeroy, a London financier, was found guilty of tax evasion. The production was doubled in The Strathmill distillery has been founded during the whisky-boom at the end of the 19th century under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet Distillery. This distillery, result of the alteration of an old mill, doubled its production capacity in The production is not marketed as single malt, and therefore the only available bottlings are those of independent bottlers.

The distillery was acquired by Japanese shareholders in , who established the current Tomatin Distillery Company Limited, and launched the modern era of whisky distilling in the Monadhliath Mountains. Tomintoul Distillery was built in the mid s and is situated in the heart of the Speyside Glenlivet region. Despite an initial lack of enthusiasm, the village was gradually established over a period of about 30 years between and More recently it holds around inhabitants.

Throughout its history Tomintoul has been a stopping place for travellers. The Tormore is one of the younger Scottish whiskies, the distillery construction began in and was completed in It was the first new distillery to be built in the country in the 20th century. Designed by Sir Albert Richardson for Long John International, it is a listed building, and one of the most architecturally striking distilleries.

The building is made of granite, has copper rotors and a clock which plays 4 different Scottish songs each quarter of an hour. The topiary hedges in the garden are also clipped to the shape of a bell or still.

In , the distillery was expanded from four to eight stills. The Tormore distillery has been controlled by Pernod-Ricard since they purchased Allied Domecq in A time capsule in the shape of a pot-still is buried in the forecourt, which is intended to be opened in History of the distillery: Dewar , the sons of founder John Dewar Sr. The best was to erect a new large distillery. Aberfeldy proved to be a great success for the company.

However, with demand for barley rising in World War I for use as a basic foodstuff, the distillery closed from to Second World War caused barley supplies to be cut, also, and the Aberfeldy Distillery was again forced to shut down temporarily. Supply to final markets was kept up by reducing the period whisky was laid up from 7 years to 3. It was not until that the company was able to meet the demand for their whisky.
