Though dendrochronology has allowed for calibration adjustments accounting for the production variations, the chronology goes back less than 10, years and even so, there is no guarantee that the tree rings are as accurate in chronicling the passing of years as many make them out to be. What is known is that C14 production has varied in the recent past, so it has surely varied greatly in prehistory as well. For the ability to be realized, C14 must be mixed quickly within a few years and completely throughout all of the carbon-containing reservoirs.

If such a condition prevailed, the contemporary C14 content of all organic samples would be essentially identical.
